Located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal, Yangzhou has been known for active commercial trade in the ancient times thanks to well-developed land and waterway transportation. Currently, it is part of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, encompassing Shanghai, and home to multinational enterprises, such as Volkswagen, Phillips, and Toray Industries. Famous as the hometown of former president Jiang Zemin, Yangzhou was selected as a Culture City of East Asia 2020.
